Geotechnical Applications
Made Possible with STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulationloading
Application Overview - Airports / Highways / Railroads
After years of rigorous field-testing, STYROFOAM™ Brand Extruded Polystyrene Insulation was first placed under highways in 1966. In the more than four decades since, STYROFOAM Brand Extruded Polystyrene Insulation products have proven to reduce heat loss from frost-susceptible subgrade and hold frost heaving, spring breakup and thaw-weakening at bay when properly installed between the subsoil and gravel base in a variety of airport, highway and railroad applications.
STYROFOAM Brand Insulation is also used to help reduce the potential for frost damage in these areas:
- Airport runways, taxiways and embankments
- Highway embankments
- Under rail track, at-grade crossings, switching yards and other railroad facilities
