Pevely, MO - March 17, 2010
The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) announced today that its Riverside facility in Pevely, Missouri, which manufactures STYROFOAM™ Brand Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Insulation, will celebrate the successful conversion to its new zero ozone-depleting, no-VOC (volatile organic compound) foaming agent technology with a ceremony on March 17 at the facility.
Riverside is the sixth and final Dow facility to convert to its new foaming agent technology. The company has been manufacturing STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation at Riverside since 1957.
"Dow is committed to providing the building industry with energy efficient solutions that are simple and sustainable," says Riverside's site leader, Bill Alexander. "The Riverside plant's conversion to this next generation foaming agent supports this commitment while continuing to deliver the same trusted performance that builders have come to expect from Dow for the past 60 years."
The celebration will begin at 11:30 a.m. with opening remarks by Alexander. Mike McGaugh, general manager, Dow Building Solutions, North America, will then discuss why STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Foam Insulation made with its new foaming agent technology is exactly the right product at the right time. The attendees, who will include community leaders and Dow employees, will be invited to commemorate the occasion at a tree planting ceremony and will conclude the ceremony with a celebratory luncheon.
Facts About Dow's Riverside Site
Dow's Riverside site began operations in 1957. The site encompasses 160 acres overlooking the Mississippi River approximately 30 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. Dow employees are active throughout the community and contribute their time and money to efforts that are aligned with the principles of sustainable development: social responsibility, environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. Among their many activities, employees and retirees host the annual Eagle Days, an environmental education program for local students conducted on the Riverside site at "Eagle Bluff" overlooking the Mississippi River. Safety and the protection of the environment are the top priorities at Riverside.
Riverside is the final Dow facility that produces STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Foam Insulation to phase out the ozone-depleting compound hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) 142b. The new proprietary foaming agent technology was developed by a team led by Dow's Simon P. Lee, who was recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for his contribution to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. The zero ozone-depleting, no-VOC foaming agent technology isn't the only way that the STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation produced at the Riverside facility contributes to a more sustainable environment. Here are a few more facts:
When properly installed in buildings, production capacity at Riverside of STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation could save CO2 emissions** equivalent to:
Planting 1 billion trees;
Reducing vehicle travel by 2.1 trillion miles or more than 85 million trips around the world; or
Saving approximately 100 billion gallons of gasoline or U.S. $200 billion ($2/gallon).
The new technology has not affected Dow's ability to recycle scrap STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Foam Insulation back into the production line either – just as its plants have been doing for many years.
Dow Building Solutions' building envelope products have received the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) Research Center Green Approved mark, making Dow the first to have its line of energy saving insulation and air sealing products eligible for meeting mandatory requirements or earning points under the National Green Building Standard.
