Future

Further requirements to improve buildings energy efficiency through to 2016 have been sign-posted in the Code for Sustainable Homes, April 2007. These now apply to all new dwellings, whether in the public or private sectors. It is intended to extend the scope to eventually include all new buildings. Code levels 1 to 6 have been established and their impact on building energy efficiency (via carbon dioxide emission) can be seen in Table 11.

Table 11 Code for Sustainable Homes: energy efficiency requirements

 Code Level  Carbon dioxide emission
% improvement over AD L1A: 2006
 U-value requireda  Target date
 1  10  0.20  2007
 2  18  0.18
 3  25  0.17  2010
 4  44b  0.12  2013
 5  100  0.10
 6  Zero carbonc  <0.10  2016

a Based on an inverted flat roof with a U-value of 0.25 W/m2.K (Part L: 2002).
b Equivalent to Passive House standard (EU aim 2015)
c Zero net carbon dioxide emissions from all energy use – yet to be fully defined.
