Hammersmith Bridge Surgery - STYROFOAM demonstrates all round fitness at new surgery

Project

Hammersmith Bridge Health Centre

In 2001 the stretch of Hammersmith Road, between the flyover itself and Hammersmith Bridge in west London, saw the completion of an exciting development from Guy Greenfield Architects. The eye-opening structure, with its brilliant white double curved panels and copper cladding, houses the new £1.15m Hammersmith Bridge Surgery. Traffic pollution levels in the area are high and, whilst the external render on the white panels is dirt and water repellent, it will still need to be pressure-washed every two years.

The STYROFOAM Solution

STYROFOAM™, the blue, rigid, extruded polystyrene insulation boards from Dow was selected as the preferred insulation material for the floors, walls and roof of the building due to its exceptionally low water absorption characteristics, low thermal conductivity and high compressive strength. FLOORMATE™ 200-X is used to insulate the floors at ground level, whilst unusually, because of the intriguing shape of the structure, WALLMATE™ CW-X is used both in the curved walls and the roof.

Within the insulated shell, a single corridor arrangement forms an extra barrier between the exterior and the hub of the practice, whilst all of the treatment rooms and GP's surgeries within the hub, face onto a protected Japanese-style internal courtyard. The site was sold by Hammersmith Council to the Health Authority and was formerly an NCP car park.
