Dow Implementing New Technology for STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation

With over 60 years of proven sustainability and performance with our industry leading STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation products, Dow Building Solutions has committed to the future by investing in next generation foaming agent solutions.

Integration process has begun at our manufacturing sites and we will be supplying product to our customers by the end of first quarter from our Dalton, Georgia, facility with subsequent plant transition throughout NA scheduled for the reminder of 2009.

Dow Building Solutions’ next generation foaming agent technology enhances the sustainability profile of STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation products. The effort was led by Simon P. Lee. Lee who was a lead author of the influential 2006 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): “Safeguarding the Ozone Layer and the Global Climate System.” The Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 was shared between the IPCC and Al Gore for their efforts on climate change. For his role as a lead author, the IPCC has officially recognized Lee for his contribution to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Dow Building Solutions’ unique and  proprietary foaming agent solution will enable us to continue manufacturing STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation with the same product performance and high insulation value standards our customers demand and rely on, while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and eliminating the use of ozone-depleting materials.

Our development of this next-generation foaming agent solution – in advance of Montreal Protocol and US EPA Guidelines – underscores Dow’s commitment to serve our customers with the best and broadest portfolio of extruded polystyrene foam solutions in the industry.

Our next-generation foaming agent solution:

  • Delivers continued high R-5/inch insulation value;
  • Satisfies all relevant technical and code requirements;
  • Provides a foaming agent solution with zero ozone depletion potential;
  • Meets regulatory requirements in advance of regulatory deadlines

The new formulation has passed all fire, industry standard physical property, and application tests.  A US ICC Evaluation Service Report ICC_ESR2142 has been received.
