Insulation of walls with STYROFOAM™
Insulation of internal walls with STYROFOAM IB
In those cases where the external insulation of the facade wall is not possible (eg. existing buildings with protected facade view or walls with direct contact to ground, etc.), the insulation can be applied onto the internal walls. As the insulation is applied on the warm, inner side, the wall structure will be exposed to more severe temperature changes. Increased attention should be paid also to thermal bridges at the adjoining structures (walls, floor slabs perpendicular to the facade walls). The condensation risk must be checked carefully, especially at rooms with high relative air humidity. The internally insulated rooms require regular and efficient ventilation. The planed surface of the STYROFOAM IB boards create a suitable basis for plastered or adhered finishings (gypsum board, ceramic tiles). Due to the relatively high vapour diffusion resistance of the boards, generally there is no need for additional vapour barrier.

The term "cavity wall" is applied to a type of masonry wall construction in which a continuous air space or cavity is provided inside the wall. A cavity wall therefore is actually two walls separated by an air space. The STYROFOAM solution for this application is STYROFOAM TG, designed to give the maximum benefit in cavity wall construction:
- tongue and groove edges, give continuity of insulation
- the 600 mm board width suits the nominal vertical spacing of wall ties
- a range of thicknesses allows thermal performance to be matched to project requirements
Exterior insulation is the most efficient way of thermally insulating buildings due to the fact that it is not interrupted at structural elements like columns, beams and slabs which create thermal bridges if uninsulated. Exterior insulation can be installed in two ways:
- Behind mechanically fixed marble or granite panels. STYROFOAM TG boards shall be fixed to external face of walls using either plastic dowel with 50 mm diameter disc head or with compatible solvent free adhesive
- STYROFOAM IB as part of a complete Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) comprising: a) Polymer modified base coat with fiberglass reinforcement fully embedded in this coat. b) Acrylic or silicone base, completely crack free, stucco coat finish system from STO- Germany (or other equally approved system).
