Dow Building Solutions’ Insulation Materials Applied at Olympic Village for Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games

Shanghai, China – Sept. 12th, 2012

As the Official Chemistry Company of the Olympic Games, Dow provides science-based solutions that improve the Olympic experience for host cities, athletes and fans everywhere. Dow innovation materials and solutions have been successfully applied in 2012 London Olympic Games. Recently, Dow Building Solutions China commercial team won the project of wall insulation and acoustic flooring for Nanjing Youth Olympic Village.  This significant success is mainly attributed to the commercial team’s great efforts to provide energy efficiency solutions for green buildings which exactly meet the customers’ needs for insulation & fire resistance, as well as outstanding team work with Dow China Corporate Olympic Team – a solid proof of Dow’s strategic focus on increasing business capture with government entities.

The Olympic Village contains living quarters, shopping plaza and operation areas. Apartments, dining halls, community centers and sports information centers will be built inside the living quarters with a housing capacity for over 5,000 people.

To highlight low carbon economy, energy-saving technologies and materials will be applied to the construction of the village, said officials of the construction headquarters for the Hexi new urban area of Nanjing. After fierce competition, Dow Building Solutions’ PU materials were successfully adopted by the developer - Nanjing AOTI Construction and Development Co., Ltd. for the wall insulation of the Olympic Village. Approximately 20,000 square meters of PU insulation were installed in the first phase of the project in June 2012. Dow PU material provides superior insulation, excellent water proof and physical performance, high strength, durability and good flame retardant which helps to build a more sustainable, safer and healthier environment.

Besides PU insulation material, Dow Building Solutions’ STYROFOAM™ XPS boards were also used with acoustic material for flooring at Gym Center to provide both excellent insulation and acoustic performance for noise reduction and are the demo materials for training venues at Youth Olympic Village.

“Dow is actively supporting Olympic Games in infrastructure projects and is a partner to deliver solutions for the games,” said Jessica Torng, General Manager Dow Building & Construction, Asia Pacific & India. “Dow PU wall insulation materials are tailor made for China. This project illustrates Dow’s unique ability to provide total insulation solution with our broad range of portfolio and a great example of our commitment to provide energy efficiency through superior insulation in the China construction market.”

As a worldwide Olympic Partner, Dow is collaborating with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and 205 national Olympic Committees to promote sustainable development and green construction ideas throughout the ten-year partnership.
About 3,500 athletes aged 14-18 will compete in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in China. The construction of the Olympic Park started in January 2011 and is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.

“As a globally diversified chemical company, we have always advocated using our international experience, products and advanced technologies to help solve the most urgent environmental challenges for China”, said Peter Sykes, President of Dow Greater China. “The success of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Village project is an important first step in penetrating the sports facility market through our Olympic partnership. We look forward to applying more innovative Dow solutions to sport facilities across China in the near future”

The city has also mapped out a sustainable post-use plan for the facilities of the Games. The Olympic Village, for example, will be used as rental apartments for high-end talents.

The Nanjing 2014  Games  will encompass all 28 Olympic sports and will be held from August 16th to 28th. It will represent a happy and healthy platform for the world’s young people.
