Karen Carter, General Manager Dow Building & Construction in Asia Pacific and India makes speech at forum on “Sustainable Development in Green Building & Property”

Qingdao, China, June 23, 2011

Karen Carter speakingThe Dow Chemical Company announces its participation in the 4th annual World Economic and Environmental Conference (WEC 2011) in Qingdao on June 19th, which was jointly hosted by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Energy Conservation Environmental Protection Association (IEEPA). The company addressed its commitment to “solving world challenges through sustainable chemistry,” and showcased innovative solutions and collaborations during the three-day event.

Rising utility costs, climate change concerns, economic dependency on foreign oil, natural resource depletion, etc. all are on the minds of today’s developers and builders. That's because operating buildings and providing year round comfort in both winter and summer accounts for almost 50% of all energy consumption globally.  Karen Carter, General Manager of Dow Building & Construction in Asia Pacific and India made a speech focused on “Building a Sustainable Future in Real Estate through Innovation & Partnership” at the forum on “Sustainable Development in Green Building and Property”.

“As a responsible leader of the global chemical industry we have a long-standing commitment to reduce emissions.  As part of that commitment, we have developed solutions for today including energy efficiency solutions for the building envelope in the China market.  These solutions include reliable XPS/EPS EIFS (external insulation and finish system) and adaptable TPO/Spray PU Foam roofing systems,”  said Karen Carter.   “Additionally, we are investing in innovations for tomorrow, such as next generation XPS blowing agent technology, which was successfully implemented in all North America STYROFOAM™ plants and the invention of Polymeric Flame Retardant (Polymeric FR) which can be used in both XPS and EPS foam insulation applications globally to replace hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). Moreover, Dow Powerhouse™ Solar Shingle launched in North America in 2011 was named one of TIME magazine’s ‘50 Best Inventions of 2009’ in the United States.  We remain focused on enabling buildings that are built right and built to last.  Join us, together we will build a sustainable future!”

The audience like governors, architects, developers and media showed their keen interest in our sustainability efforts and innovative energy efficiency solutions.

Dow also hosted a reception under the theme “Investing in Nature” to celebrate locally its breakthrough collaboration with The Nature Conservancy. Approximately 100 stakeholders attended. Some of the attendees expressed their wishes for further cooperation with Dow during the dinner event.

Dow was presented the International Carbon-Value Award by the conference organizers during the opening ceremony which confirms Dow’s contribution to sustainability development worldwide.
