On June 8th, 2009, "2009 Tongji Building Festival and 'Dow Cup' Paperboard Building Design Contest co-organized and sponsored by Dow Building Solutions ended up with a great success. Mr. Yan Ji, Sales Manager of Dow Building Solutions, said at the award ceremony that the contest not only allowed students from Tongji University as well as its related colleges and schools to design and build their own "home" and grasp related knowledge & skills preliminarily, but also demonstrated the spirit of innovation and teamwork; moreover, it drove the students to think in an insightful manner about the modern development of buildings in the future and have a better knowledge on how to reach a harmony between the building(s) and environment in urban construction. Mr. Yan also expressed his wishes that the students could implement the "sustainable development" and "environmental protection & energy saving" concepts advocated by Dow in their future works after graduation. Dow Attaches Great Importance to Personnel Cultivation Dow was named the "2008 Most Influential Energy-Saving Building Company in China", and in the list of "Top 10 Exterior Wall Insulation Enterprises" & "Top 10 Global Brands". Besides, Dow boasts the world's leader in providing energy-saving building solutions. It always holds that social responsibility is essential for a company to survive and develop and it is Dow's unavoidable responsibility to convey the concept of sustainability to the students in a practical manner. By organizing "Dow Cup Paperboard Building Design & Building Contest" together with the university, Dow hopes to allow the students to fully display the concepts, technologies and creativities in their design in a lively, vivid and practical way, better grasp the knowledge of building materials and express their concerns of the environmental issues so as to design more energy efficient and environmental-friendly buildings in the future. The Contest Completed Successfully Reportedly, the "School of Building and Urban Planning Building Festival" is the 3rd of its kind in Tongji University and plays an important role in the teaching of "design basics" of the School of Building and Urban Planning. All 2008 freshman students from all majors of the school and delegations from several other schools and universities (Department of Structure, School of Civil Engineering, Tongji University; Department of Building Science, Shanghai University) participated in the contest. Approximately 350 students of 12 classes from 6 majors: Building Science, Protection of Historical Buildings, Urban Planning, Science of Landscape, Industrial Design and Art Design were divided into 24 teams and have designed and created 26 paperboard buildings. Through participation in the contest, the students not only developed a basic understanding about performance of materials, building methods and processes as well as characteristics in building structure & building physics, but obtained some knowledge of the basic requirements for building's functions, human dimensions, space and technologies, etc. In addition to fine souvenirs, cash awards were granted to winners of gold, silver, bronze and excellence prizes.
Moreover, a technical seminar of "Dow Building Solutions - Leading the way in Energy Efficiency" organized by Dow and the school also roused extensive interest and attention of the teachers/students of Tongji and other architects. According to some teachers and students, "advances in science and technology and changes to the living conditions will result in continuous improvement in the future residential conditions and residential environments and impose higher requirements on buildings that were used previously by the people as only a shelter from rain and wind. So, what will the future 'home' look like? What can it bring to us? By listening to the lecture and participating in the contest, we not only learn how Dow thinks and acts when solving the environmental protection and energy deficiency problems, but also that many standards of Dow can serve as valuable reference for modernizing future buildings and building our own 'home'". Win-Win University-Enterprise Alliance Alliance with Tongji Univerisity is a strategic step of Dow. "Dow is one of the world's top 500 enterprises and is committed to promoting sustainable development in China. We attach great importance to environmental protection, energy saving and corporate social responsibility. While making great efforts to explore the domestic market, Dow has been looking for opportunity to reward the society and provide assistance in the development of China's building industry and cultivation of outstanding talents. Dow Building Solutions is committed to providing the local customers with best energy saving & insulation materials and solutions for a wide variety of building applications." said Chen Daowei, Marketing Manager of Dow Building Solutions, "Tongji University School of Building and Urban Planning is the cradle of future planners and architects. We hope that through the festival and contest, the students may acquire precious practical experience and apply better concepts and technologies into their future design". A teacher participating in the contest believes that through cooperation with global leading enterprises like Dow to convert their rich experience and leading solutions of environmental protection into specific teaching plan and through the contest to integrate teaching with practices, it is a valuable opportunity to develop the students' ability to combine the theory with practices, and promote development of the science of building and teaching methods. Some students also believe that the practical analysis and case studies of particular subjects such as environmental protection, energy saving and sustainable development stimulates their way of thinking, enhances their overall ability to analyze and solve the problems as well as the spirit of teamwork.
